Agios Ioannis - To Kastri (Mamma Mia)
Agios Ioannis to Kastri is one of Skopelos’ most iconic landmarks, dramatically perched on a steep rocky outcrop rising from the sea on the island’s northeastern coast. Famous worldwide after appearing in the film Mamma Mia!, the small whitewashed church sits atop the rock, reached by climbing around 200 carved stone steps that reward visitors with breathtaking panoramic views of the Aegean Sea and the surrounding coastline. Beyond its cinematic fame, the site holds deep spiritual significance for locals and offers a powerful sense of isolation and beauty, especially at sunrise or sunset. We can also offer special tours to Agios Ioannis to Kastri, allowing visitors to enjoy this unforgettable experience comfortably, safely, and with local insight.
Sentoukia
Sentoukia (Σεντούκια) in Skopelos are a group of ancient rock-cut tombs carved directly into the limestone rock on a remote mountainside of the island.
-
They are prehistoric or early ancient tombs, usually dated to the Mycenaean period (around 16th–11th century BC).
-
The word sentoukia comes from the Italian “santucce” or “cassoni” and is used locally to mean stone chests or coffins.
-
Originally there were four tombs, carved in rectangular shapes resembling large stone sarcophagi.
-
On the southeastern side of Skopelos, in a very isolated and rocky area above the sea.
-
There is no proper road access — they can only be reached by:
-
Boat, or
-
A difficult hiking trail (recommended only for experienced hikers).
-
-
They are among the oldest archaeological remains on Skopelos.
-
The setting is dramatic: sheer cliffs, sea views, and total isolation.
-
Over time, three of the four tombs were looted in antiquity; one remains mostly intact.
